“My new silicone gel implants look much more natural!” says Patty, 41, who recently had her saline implants replaced after one deflated.
“My silicone gel implants feel much better and the replacement was so easy,” she says. “And I didn't even have to go under general anesthesia. I was in and out in less than an hour and went back to work the next day.”
More women are opting for silicone gel implants
“Quite a few of my patients with saline breast implants are switching to silicone gel,” says Dr. Parungao. “Some women want to increase the size of their implants. Others, like Patty, choose silicone gel after a saline implant deflates.”
The newest silicone gel breast implants, approved by the FDA in November 2006, are called “cohesive” implants. “The filling is like the inside of a jellybean,” Dr. Parungao explains. “If the implant ruptures, the filling is designed to stay intact.”
Implants can be replaced in about 45 minutes
Dr. Parungao can replace breast implants under local anesthesia in only 30-45 minutes. “I often give patients a little Valium beforehand,” he says. “Because a patient with implants already has the ‘pocket’ created in the breast, replacing the implants is very quick.”

Patty, who went from an A cup to a D cup seven years ago, said that saline implants “improved my figure 100%—but they were hard. They looked great, but they didn’t feel natural.
“I'd been thinking about replacing my saline implants with silicone gel,” Patty recalls, “so when one of my saline implants deflated, that's what I decided to do. The cost was less than half what I'd expected—and I'm thrilled with my silicone gel implants!”
‘They look and feel more like natural breasts’
Patty notices a big difference between her saline implants and her new silicone gel ones. “If I put on a Wonderbra before, my breasts wouldn't go together,” she recalls. “Now I can actually push my breasts together and get cleavage. I wasn't able to do that when I had saline implants.
“I look better in a bathing suit now, too—there's not a big space between my breasts. Especially if you don't have a lot of breast tissue to start with, silicone gel implants have a much more natural feel,” says Patty. “I love 'em!”
