Men: Want to build your competitive edge? Consider what plastic surgery and non-surgical procedures can do for you

  • Are you a Baby Boomer in a work setting full of
    younger competitors?
  • Does your face look as young as you feel?
  • Just can't get rid of those love handles or sagging abs?
  • Want to look more attractive to women?

Looking younger and more fit will boost your confidence and give you a definite edge in business and social settings. And there's nothing wrong with wanting to look good—at any age.

If you're a man considering plastic surgery or non-surgical treatments, you're not alone. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reports that 935,210 cosmetic procedures were performed on men in 2009—an 8% increase over 2008. Men make up 9.4% of all cosmetic surgery patients in the U.S.

Many men are interested in improving their looks—but without a lot of bruising or significant time away from the office. Fortunately, there are a number of surgical and non-surgical procedures that are made to order.

Minimally invasive ‘lunchtime’ procedures
mean no downtime

According to ASAPS statistics, American men received 774,357 non-surgical procedures in 2009.

Popular non-surgical procedures for men:

  • Botox Cosmetic—257,786 in 2009—a 14.5% increase over 2008

Is there a furrow in your brow? Are worry lines on your forehead making you look older? Botox Cosmetic, an injectable treatment, will visibly smooth and soften moderate to severe frown lines and forehead creases. Result: Within two to seven days, you'll look calmer, refreshed and more youthful.

Botox also treats severe underarm sweating

Botox controls severe underarm sweating, or hyperhydrosis, by temporarily blocking chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. This use of Botox has been approved by the FDA.

  • Laser hair reduction—166,035 in 2009

Does a hairy back make you want to keep your shirt on at the beach—or in the bedroom? Laser hair reduction can quickly treat a large area of the body in one appointment. This effective method uses light pulses to penetrate to the bulb of the hair follicle, removing hair and permanently impairing its regrowth.

  • Microdermabrasion—56,912 in 2009—a 42.9% increase over 2008

Want to get rid of acne scars and pits? Do you have large pores and wish you could refine the texture of your skin? Microdermabrasion gently buffs away the surface layer of the skin, refining its texture and stimulating the production of new cells and collagen.

  • Hyaluronic acid facial fillers—91,218 in 2009—a 46.1% increase over 2008

Juvéderm and Restylane are made of a naturally occurring substance in the skin that helps add volume and restore moisture. Injectable hyaluronic acid facial fillers are mostly commonly used to plump up the nasolabial folds, which extend from the nose to the corners of the mouth. They can also smooth out acne scars or pits and fill in lines in the glabella, or the area between the eyebrows.

  • IPL (intense pulsed light) photofacials—47,676 in 2009

An IPL photofacial is a gentle, state-of-the-art approach to making your skin look younger and smoother. This technique can help repair sun-damaged skin and treat enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, rosacea, as well as dilated blood vessels.

Men's facial and body contouring surgery
reshapes your physique

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that 165,959 surgical cosmetic procedures were performed on men in 2008. When diet and exercise alone are not enough, it's time to consider facial and body contouring surgery to achieve the look you want.

Popular men's surgical procedures:

  • Eyelid surgery—25,004 in 2009

Do you have puffiness around your eyes? Have you developed “hooding” in your upper eyelids that makes you look sleepy—and may even interfere with your vision? Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, corrects drooping upper eyelids and eliminates puffy “bags” under the eyes, making you look younger, more rested and refreshed.

  • Liposuction—40,519 in 2009—a 28.8% increase over 2008

Can't get rid of those love handles, no matter how often you go to the gym? Starting to notice a double chin? Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that streamlines your physique by suctioning away fat. And because men retain their skin elasticity longer than women do, liposuction is especially effective on males.

Now Dr. Parungao offers Cool Lipo, a laser-assisted technique with minimal bruising and downtime—and a skin-tightening effect.

  • Male breast reduction—16,801 in 2009

Gynecomastia, a medical term for excess male breast fatty tissue affects an estimated 40% to 60% of men, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. It may affect only one breast or both. If gynecomastia makes you feel self-conscious, liposuction of the fatty tissue can help. This procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin. Result: Your chest will be flatter, firmer and better contoured.

  • Body contouring after massive weight loss

Many of the 100,000 Americans who undergo gastric bypass or lap-band surgery each year find that the weight melts away—but the excess skin stays behind. If you've had a massive weight loss, you may be left with loose, hanging skin on your belly, arms, legs, breasts—even your eyelids and face. Skin reduction or body contouring surgery can get rid of pounds of uncomfortable, embarrassing loose skin after massive weight loss, and help you achieve the look you desire.

  • Facelift—10,541 in 2009

When you look in the mirror, do you see a slackening or jowly jawline? Loose, lax facial skin? Folds and fat deposits around your neck? If you'd like to look as young as you feel inside, you may want to consider a facelift.

  • Tummy tuck—4,882 in 2009—an 11.3% increase over 2008

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess abdominal skin and fat, then tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall and tightens and smoothes the area around the navel. You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you are in relatively good shape, but have loose abdominal skin and/or abdominal fat that won't respond to dieting or exercise.
