For years, carbon dioxide or CO2 laser treatments have been the gold standard in treating fine lines and wrinkles. But the treatments were drastic: traditional CO2 laser skin resurfacing removes the entire top layer of skin and takes weeks of downtime—a luxury few of us have.
Now there's an easier solution: The fractional CO2 laser
“Like a traditional CO2 laser, a fractional laser uses laser light to generate heat that ablates or burns off the top layer of skin,” Dr. Parungao explains. “But the fractional laser leaves columns of healthy, untouched tissue between the areas that are ablated.
“What we lose in aggressiveness, we gain back in terms of reduced downtime, faster healing and less pain,” says Dr. Parungao. “Some patients might need more than one treatment, but they won't suffer open, draining wounds like patients who undergo traditional CO2 laser treatments.”
What can fractional CO2 lasers do?
- Diminsh fine lines and wrinkles
- Reverse sun damage and uneven pigmentation
- Soften acne scarring
- Tighten the skin and promote collagen growth
‘I'm surprised at how quickly I healed’
These days, many men want to refresh their appearance, as they're competing with younger people in the job market.
“Frank,” a 50-year-old executive, recently had a fractional CO2 laser treatment, and is very pleased with the results.
“After the treatment, my face felt like I had a sunburn for about three hours,” he says. “Then it was as though someone turned off a wall switch and the stinging shut off.
“I had my treatment on Tuesday at noon and went to a party on Saturday,” Frank recalls. “It looked like I had a sunburn, but the peeling was over.”
What improvements did he see? “It improved my skin's tone and texture, reduced the size of my pores and removed my acne scars,” he says.
